SRM UNIVERSITY – A Glance

The Department of English and Foreign Languages
Brief History
The Department of English was established in 1985. It expanded to include other foreign languages such as German and Japanese and became the Department of English and Foreign Languages in 2005−06. Subsequently, French was added followed by Korean in the academic year 2007−08. Chinese was also offered as an option from the academic year 2009−10. Such an exposure ensures the students with highly prospective global careers.
Human Resources
The Department has 30 teaching and 3 non-teaching staff members.
The Department offers part-time PhD programs in different areas of English Language and Literature for internal and external candidates. The Foreign Language staff members are 15 in number − 4 for French, 5 for German, 5 for Japanese and 1 for Korean. In addition we have native French and Chinese tutors to give the classes an indigenous ambiance.
We are proud of the fact that our faculty get an opportunity to go abroad on deputation for teaching assignments through a nationwide selection process.
Infrastructure
The Department of English and Foreign Languages has a well-stocked library catering to the varied interests of students and faculty. The collection ranges from preparatory books for exams in English proficiency (TOEFL, IELTS, BEC and so on) to books on man management i.e., Philosophy, Ethics, Religion etc.
The Language Laboratory is equipped with 60 computers, LCD projector, television set and CD players and necessary software which aid in the development of LSRW skills in English and the other foreign languages. The Language Laboratory also has an area outfitted with a lectern and sound system, earmarked for presentations and group discussions.
Faculty
The Department comprises of experts in various languages. The members of the faculty are highly qualified, internationally recognized and have specialized in subjects like phonetics, communication, English for Special Purposes, Technical English and Communicative English. Besides, there are well-qualified staff members in Japanese, German, French, Chinese and Korean.
Our staff members hold memberships in reputed organizations such as ELTAI, IEEE, ISC and IAWS.
Institute−Industry Interaction Activities
An English Training Program is conducted in LSRW for Employees from Industries such as Ford.
FDPs / International Conferences etc
Every year the Department conducts a Short Term Training Program (STTP) and a National Conference on themes relating to Language Learning. Renowned academicians and language experts are invited to address the gathering to impart their views on language teaching and learning. Delegates from all over the country take part and benefit from the interactions. This year the focal theme is Zealous Language Teaching (ZLT 2012)
Selected papers are compiled and brought out in the Conference Proceedings.
Objectives
- To provide a forum for teachers of English to meet periodically and discuss problems relating to the teaching of English in India.
- To help teachers interact with educational administrators on matters relating to the teaching of English.
- To disseminate information in the ELT field among teachers of English.
- To undertake innovative projects aimed at the improvement of learners’ proficiency in English.
- To promote professional solidarity among teachers of English at primary, secondary and university levels and
- To promote professional excellence among its members in all possible ways.
Objectives of ZLT 2012
- To emphasize the importance of developing English language skills and to foreground the connectivity between language and literature.
- To enable academicians to share knowledge of current theories concerning linguistics, cognitive, affective, social and cultural factors governing the acquisition and use of English Language.
- To showcase new curricular frameworks, teaching methods and assessment techniques.
- To focus on the question “What is truly necessary for effective language teaching?”

Instructions to Authors of Papers
· All abstracts and papers should carry contact phone numbers, email id and address of the author
· Only Power Point Presentation is accepted.
· Each presenter will be allowed only 6 minutes including question time.
· Full papers should not exceed 4 pages and must follow the given format:
· Font type and size: Times New Roman/Title: 16, Sub title: 14, Text: 12
· Alignment: Justified
· Margin: 1” on all sides, Line space: 1.5”
· Reference Details
Name of the author, Title (italics), Name of the publisher: Place of publication, Year of publication.
No abstract or paper will be accepted after the specified deadlines. Editor’s decision is final.
Paper presenters may send registration fee after notification of acceptance.

Registration Details
Registration fee Rs. 1000/- per participant (Includes a copy of the conference proceedings with ISBN, food and accommodation in the university campus)
Full Time Research Scholars Rs. 750 on producing ID card
No TA/DA will be provided
Registration form is to be sent in the prescribed format along with a D.D. in favor of
SRM English Association, Payable at City Union Bank, Tambaram.
Accommodation
Accommodation will be provided for outstation participants on request in the SRM University Hostel. (Indicate requirement in registration form).
Accommodation is also available at SRM Hotel (Star Category Hotel), Kattankulathur, at a tariff of Rs. 2000 per day.
